Lindal Cedar Homes Re-imagines the Seth Peterson Cottage for New Series<\/strong><\/p>\n

In developing her master\u2019s degree thesis at the School of Architecture at Taliesin<\/a> (SOAT), Trina Lindal looked to Frank Lloyd Wright, the school\u2019s founder, and his late-in-life work for inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are the essential Usonian elements?\u201d\u2008Lindal wondered. \u201cHow do we respect that but also create a home for modern living?\u201d<\/p>\n

Answering those questions led Lindal and collaborating architect Aris Georges, a former Taliesin fellow and SOAT instructor, to create the Imagine Series<\/a>. Seattle-based Lindal Cedar Homes<\/a> launched it this past June in response to a licensing agreement proposal from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Lindal is a granddaughter of company founder Sir Walter Lindal, a pioneer in building prefabricated homes, and a daughter of Bob Lindal, the current president and CEO.<\/p>\n

The Imagine Series consists of seven homes inspired by Wright\u2019s Usonian designs and design principles. The lineup includes what Lindal describes as \u201ctranslations\u201d of the Seth\u2008Peterson Cottage<\/a> (Mirror Lake); the Bachman-Wilson\u2008House (Crystal\u2008Springs); the Gordon\u2008House (Silverton); the Jacobs I House (Madison); and the Penfield House (Willoughby) \u2014 as well as two Lindal-original homes, the Highland Park and the Mesquite.<\/p>\n

Stuart Graff, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation<\/a> underscores that distinction. \u201cWhile the houses are all inspired by Wright\u2019s designs,\u201d\u2008he said, \u201cvery importantly, we didn\u2019t want to replicate Wright\u2019s work. A \u2018Frank Lloyd Wright house\u2019 is a Frank Lloyd Wright house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accordingly, Lindal and the foundation were guided by what Graff describes as the \u201cintellectual underpinnings of a Usonian. How do you take a small space and make it feel like a big space by\u00a0(leading viewers\u2019) eyes in different directions, by connecting strongly to the outside world? How can these principles be deeply embodied in a house designed for contemporary dwellers and meeting contemporary needs?\u201d<\/p>\n

For Lindal, the Peterson cottage proved to be an obvious choice \u2014 both for its Usonian bona fides<\/em> and also for its aesthetic as \u201cthat little cabin in the woods that people associate with Lindal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lindal translation of the Peterson cottage closely resembles Wright\u2019s original. Notable differences include post-and-beam construction on Lindal\u2019s 5-foot, 4-inch grid and the absence of mitred glass in the corners of the front window bank. The Mirror Lake is slightly larger at 958 square feet.<\/p>\n

Graff predicts the Mirror Lake will be well-received. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of love for the Peterson cottage in the Wright community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe a few people who stay there will, in turn, decide they love it so much they want to embrace the design \u2014 and they can go out and buy the kit. It\u2019s a heckuva souvenir, if you will.\u201d<\/p>\n
